The real meaning of the 12 Days of Christmas

(paraphrased from Ace Collins' book – Stories Behind the Best Loved Songs of Christmas)

For the British Empire, the early sixteenth century brought in change – King Henry VIII wanted an annulment from his marriage (which was refused by the Catholic church).  So, he took over as Supreme Head of the Church of England, separating it from Roman papal authority, and forbid by law the practice of Catholicism.  Any Catholic, no matter adult or child who spoke or wrote of their faith was arrested and tried – often even put to death.
As in the early days of Christianity in Rome, Catholics in England went “underground” - holding secret masses.  No signs of their faith could be revealed which posed a problem – how to teach children.  If they were not able to write anything down, how were they going to pass on doctrine?  Secret codes were made up and passed along – one being the most successful codes ever invented by this movement.   A Christmas carol was written that on the surface seemed silly & nonsensical.  In fact, this strange song was so much fun to sing it even made its way into pubs, concert halls, and even the royal palace.  No one suspected the real meaning behind these words.  Through the years, many theories and explanations have been voiced – the most popular being these are gifts from a young man in love.
In reality, the twelve days are simply the mark of time between Dec.25 (Christ's birth) to Jan 6 (Epiphany-the celebration of the wise men bearing gifts).  And, the real secret code was in meaning of the gifts.  Each Catholic singer understood that this song was about pure and true love which only comes from God.

Partridge in a Pear Tree   The anchor to the faith is Christ's death and resurrection.  Thus, verse one bore repeating (over & over) with each new one.  To protect her defenseless chicks, a mother partridge will lure her enemies away..  Just as she sacrifices herself for them, so does Christ for man.  The pear tree symbolizes the cross.  Together, gift #1 represents the ultimate gift given by God – His son, born on Christmas Day, and later sacrificing himself on the cross.

Two Turtle Doves   Symbols of truth and peace, doves were used to represent God's truth in both the old and new testaments.

Three French Hens   In the sixteenth century, these were very expensive and served only in homes of the wealthiest – food 'fit for a king'.  Thusly, when Catholic children sang of 3 French hens, they knew that these represented the very expensive gifts brought to Christ the King by the wise men – gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Four Calling Birds   These represent the four gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke & John

Five Golden Rings    The Pentateuch or 'Torah' (the first 5 books of the Old Testament) are reminders to us of man's sinful nature.  Only Christ, not the law, can reconcile us to God.
Six Geese A-Laying    Even today, the egg is a symbol of new life.  So, the six geese laying eggs represents God creating, in six days, new life out of a void.

Seven Swans A-Swimming   Swans are considered one of the most graceful and beautiful birds in England.  In Romans 12:6-8, Paul speaks of the seven 'gifts of the Holy Spirit'.  Thus, when we walk with God, these gifts (prophesy, service, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership & mercy) will move in and out of lives just as gracefully and easily as the swan moves across the water.

Eight Maids A-Milking   The lowest job in England at the time was the man or woman who had to work cattle or in a barn.  This meant, they had little worth to their masters.  Yet, Christ came to serve everyone – regardless of status, race, color or creed.  His message in Matt 5:3-10, known as The Beatitudes, clearly tells of eight blessings offered to all (the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the hungry, the merciful, the pure of heart, the peacemaker, and the righteous).

Nine Ladies Dancing   Symbolizes the real joy and rewards of following Christ.  Our lives will show the nine Fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, & self-control) when we give ourselves to Him.

Ten Lords A-Leaping   Lords were supposed to be honorable men – thus these were used to symbolize the Ten Commandments given by God through Moses.

Eleven Pipers Piping    These were the eleven apostles (12 minus Judas) who took the message of Christ to the world.

Twelve Drummers Drumming   Represents The Apostles Creed - a statement of faith  – the basis of what Christian churches believe.  There are twelve elements to it:

I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord -
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.
The third day, he arose from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and
sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and, life everlasting.
Amen

One Palatable Pe-can Pie

For those of you who read my title and saw the word Palatable and got confused, then you need to buy a thesaurus because it means delicious.

Anywho, I like to bake.  If you are confused about the word bake, it does not mean cook, it means bake.  I like to bake because I am good at it (or at least I think I am so don't tell me otherwise ) and I am bad at cooking.  So since I like to bake, I thought I would try and make a pecan pie from scratch for Thanksgiving.  Well that sounds easy you say....here is the catch, I wanted to make the crust from scratch too.  When I told my mom this, she laughed and said no, there is a frozen pie crust in the freezer so use that because it will make your life a lot easier.  Well being the stubborn person that I am, telling me no just makes me want to do it more so I went for it.   Now I know why she laughed at me.  It is REALLY hard.  But after working at it all day and probably overworking it (it still tasted just fine anyway) I did it.  So as usual, here are my pictures.  Away we go.....

First the Pie Crust (I got the crust recipe off of the Pioneer Woman's blog)

                               Start with all of this

Add the flour (3 cups I think)

Add your shortening and then mix it with whatever this tool is
(I forget the name...sorry)

Beat an Egg like Auburn Beats Bama

Add the egg, cold water and Vinegar to the mix

Add a Tablespoon of salt

Mix all together with a spoon

Grab some with your hands and...

...make 3 piles

then semi-flatten them, bag them up and put them in the freezer for about 15 mins. or the fridge if you want it to stay longer.  Like me, I put it in the fridge and then went to go get my hair done.

Flour your counter top
(Don't be afraid to make a mess)

Throw down your dough

Roll it out, but you have to work fast and don't over work it
(I learned the hard way)

looking good

hard part, putting it in the pan.

For a pretty design, you can use the back side of a fork

NOW THE INSIDE OF THE PIE
(one of my mom's recipes)

Bring Sugar and Oil to a boil
(ha that rhymes)

after boil, SLOWLY mix in with eggs

Add Vanilla and butter

Chop 1 cup of pecans

and then add it into the mix

pour into crust and then bake

AND EAT!  YUMMY

Forgiveness

I've been thinking a lot about forgiveness lately.  Forgiveness is something that definitely does not happen over night and I have been wondering why this is?  God can forgive as soon as we have sinned, but yet it is so hard for us to do the same.  We hold grudges and we hold our anger in because we have been hurt, but yet holding this in only brings more pain upon ourselves. In Ephesians 4:32, Paul writes, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." These eloquent words remind us to be kind and to forgive, but sometimes it is just not that simple.  Two and a half years ago I had more hatred for someone than I have had ever before.  This past week, after years of prayer, I think I have found a place in my heart to forgive.  Forgiveness lifts our burdens and allows us to move on in peace; and though I know I will still struggle with my burdens forever,  I know God is always there to listen.

If you have to write a paper...

If you are stuck at the library for hours on in, then you might as well be with good company!

(Please note how many books and primary sources are on this table)

oh and quote of the night: You better live a nutty life cause otherwise it's just a bunch of Tuesdays strung     together...and come on, who likes Tuesdays?

Did You Know...

In the past, when a clan no longer wanted a member in it, they would burn down their house. This is where the expression “to get fired” comes from.

Wild Wild West Champs!

War Eagle!!  Well what a game we had yesterday against those Georgia Bulldogs.  I think like most Auburn fans, I was a little  a lot disappointed with the first half.  Our defense was no where to be found and Cam could not get any movement passed the Georgia D.  But Chizik or someone must have lit a fire under them because they came out to play second half.  But it wasn't a clean victory for Auburn.  During the last two plays of the game, a fight broke out and punches were thrown and Auburn's #93, Mike Blanc, and #49 Michael Goggans were ejected from the game.  But it was an AMAZING last home game for the Seniors and a WONDERFUL victory for Auburn.  Now, Auburn is the SEC West Champions and Atlanta, HERE WE COME!

Victory!

Cam's the Man

Oh, did I mention that GA fans lit Toomer's on fire.

May the Oldest Rivalry in the South live on!

Silence

If you know me, I like to talk.

But sometimes, especially lately with the pressures of life, I just need silence and time with my own thoughts.

A good cause

Today at church, Rusty (our head pastor) did a sermon about our partner church in Buloba, Uganda.  A couple of weeks ago, some members of our congregation were able to go to Buloba and help build the church and set up rain catchers.  But one main point that he focused on was how both of our churches are involved with Africa Renewal Ministries.  ARM is a ministry where people can sponsor a child for $35 a month.  With this sponsorship, a child gets to go to school, they get a school uniform, and 1 meal a day.  The program focuses strongly around God and the kid's education.  With over 20 current projects, Africa Renewal Ministries is making a difference in the lives of thousands every day.

LSWHO??!!??

What a FANTASTIC weekend; we are #1 in the BCS polls!

Growing up, I was never a fan of LSU.  This could have been because my dad told me that I was allowed to apply to any school in the nation except LSU, so naturally I have wanted to beat them since freshman year.  Well, with really upsetting losses in 07 and 08 and then just LSU whooping last year, it was about time that we beat them.  But now, we have to deal with the pressure of being #1.  Ever since Alabama lost, there has been this curse over the number 1 team; week 7 Ohio State, week 8 Oklahoma and now week 9 Auburn.  What makes this curse even worse is that Ohio State and Oklahoma lost while on the road....next week, Auburn is on the road at Ole Miss.  My theory is that Alabama secretly knew that we were going to be better than them so they tried to put this curse on us.  Well, they are going to fail because we are Auburn and we are All In!  War Eagle!

Such a beautiful sight to see!

All I do is Win!

When you find yourself stressed...

Look to the Lord

My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. (Exodus 33:14)
